Radon in Water

Professional Testing and Mitigation of Radon in Water

Even Washing Hands Exposes You to Radon in Water

Water can transport radon to areas of your home that may otherwise be a safe distance from radon-rich soils and foundations. There are health risks associated with drinking radon-contaminated water, such as stomach cancer, but the real danger is breathing radon gas that evaporates into the air.

You may be exposed to radon in water during normal household activities, including:

  • Drinking water
  • Showering
  • Washing dishes
  • Doing laundry
  • Cooking
  • Washing pets

Maine Radon & Environmental offers reliable testing and mitigation of radon in water to homeowners in E. Shore Maryland and throughout Delaware, including Windham, Portland, and Brunswick. We are a certified member of the nationally recognized National Radon Defense network of contractors that homeowners trust to protect their homes against radon.

How Water Source and Usage Affects Radon Levels

Groundwater sources, such as wells, are dangerously close to bedrock where radon leaches out and accumulates. Wells often contain the highest concentrations because there is no space for radon gas to freely evaporate and it dissolves into the water. In addition to location, geologic shifts and climate conditions around the source can affect radon in water levels.

If you have an issue with home radon from water, 10,000 pCi/L of radon inside your water supply can contribute to 1 pCi/L in the air you breathe. Once the water has entered your home, there are many factors that can affect how much or how quickly radon gas is released:

  • Type of activity/length of exposure
  • Level of radon in water
  • Amount of water used
  • Water and air temperatures
  • Air exchange rates
  • Size of home and volume of occupants

Testing for Radon in Water

You can't fix a radon problem if you don't know you have one. Maine Radon & Environmental has certified Radon Measurement Specialists that will personally retrieve samples of your water and send them to a lab where they are processed within 48 hours.

What do these results mean?

While ingesting radon in water poses similar yet reduced risks of cancer, radon gas that evaporates out is the main concern. For context, water with radon levels of 4,000 pCi/L can contribute to .4 pCi/L of airborne radon gas in your home. There are three levels of severity used to indicate airborne radon levels:

  • High: 4.0 pCi/L and above
  • Moderate, 2.0 - 4.0 pCi/L
  • Low, 2.0 pCi/L and below

While there is no current federal maximum contamination limit (MCL) for radon in water, the EPA has suggested an MCL of 300pCi/L for public water supplies, or 4,000 pCi/L in cities that have implemented their own radon in water mitigation programs. Our experienced team can help explain how your radon in water test results may relate to your indoor air quality.

Mitigation of Radon in Your Home's Water Supply

Expert Radon in Water Testing to Protect Your Whole Home

We offer mitigation of radon in water at the point-of-entry before it enters your home's water supply instead of at the point-of-use where individual taps must be protected.

Maine Radon & Environmental offers the best radon in water mitigation system that reliably reduces radon by up to 99%. Our system uses a low voltage compressor and specially engineered pipes to create hydrodynamc pressure that forces water to the top of the well where harmful gasses such as radon and methane are aerated out and safely ventilated into the atmosphere. It runs 24/7 for continual coverage, yet only consumes about as much energy as a 60W incandescent lightbulb.

Our aeration methods will not airlock your well pump and will not freeze over as heat emitted by the pump melts away ice and snow. Plus, our radon in water mitigation system is virtually maintenance-free! It requires 3 simple filters changes each year that can easily be done by the homeowner.

Products

Radon Environmental offers high-performance radon technologies for consumers, builders, and mitigation professionals.

The Airwell™ reduces radon levels in well water by 92-99%. It is the only system on the market that mitigates radon outside of the home in the well. Contractors insert a pipe with an aeration section from top to bottom in the well. Then, a low voltage compressor delivers air to the Airwell pipe, creating hydrodynamic pressure. This pressure causes water from the base of the well to rise through the pipe and become aerated through the active section. As a result, the air removes previously trapped gasses from the water.

This industry-leading system comes with the following benefits:

  • Reduces radon by 92-99%
  • Low voltage
  • No maintenance or cleaning
  • Runs 24/7

MCIS Trade Group LLC was founded in 2016 to provide contractors with water filtration products.

The AcceL-AerAtor E99 is a radon water removal system that offers a differential fill valve system. Equipped with a three-year warranty on all components, this effective system reduces the radon levels in water for a safer home. It is easier to clean, lightweight, and more efficient.

This system comes with the following features and benefits:

  • Full automatic operation
  • Convenient water meter
  • Only one cord to plug in
  • No complicated level switch system
  • 99% effective on removal of radon
